刘家皓博士1977年进入湖北医科大学医疗系（现武汉大学医学部)，1985年获湖北医科大学妇产科硕士学位。1989年赴比利时留学，1995年获比利时布鲁塞尔自由大学生物医学博士学位。1992年-1995年任该大学医学院生殖医学中心卵浆内单精子注射（ICSI）实验室（该实验室是ICSI的创始机构）首席主任和胚胎着床前遗传病诊断（PGD）实验室主任；1995年-2002年任美国大巴尔的摩医学中心人工辅助生殖中心主任和PGD室主任。2003年被聘为武汉大学教授。刘家恩博士长期从事不孕不育症的治疗和试管婴儿工作。在国际著名学术刊物上发表论著76篇，有多项首创技术，例如：世界首例植入前胚胎DMD诊断技术、睾丸精子体外培养成熟技术、世界首例将ICSI应用于PGD、超快速植入前胚胎单细胞DNA荧光原位杂交技术（FISH）、植入前胚胎单细胞重复DNA荧光原位杂交技术等。并数次在国际上本领域获奖：
1990年 比利时—荷兰胚胎学学会授予“青年科学家奖”；
1993年 美国和欧洲生殖医学会共同授予“大西洋生殖医学交流奖”；
1998年 美国和世界生殖与避孕学会共同授予“辅助生殖技术奖”。
